Heneage Lloyd and his Sister, Thomas Gainsborough (1750)
The title of the painting is Heneage Lloyd and his Sister, by Thomas Gainsborough, painted in 1750. He used oil on canvas. Thomas Gainsborough was known as one of the most famous portrait and landscape painters in 18th century Britain. He was born on May 14, 1727 and died on Augsut 2, 1788.
There are two characters, Heneage Lloyd and his sister. Maybe they are rich because they look like aristocrats. The scene probably takes place in Britain because it looks like an English landscape. They look serious because they are sitting for the painter.
The man is sitting on a rock next to his sister, who is standing. The man may be young because he is not very tall. He is wearing a hat and a suit to prove his grandeur. His face is effeminate, he has androgynous features. The sister is wearing a long dress, a hat and a necklace to show her femininity and she is holding a stick. She is elegant.
To earn money, Gainsborough had to paint rich people, however, he prefers to emphasize the landscape, his favourite topic. The painting and the characters are beautiful because of the sun reflection on the water. The sun enables the painter to draw the attention of the audience to the landscape on the left. In the painting, the focusing point is not placed on the characters, which is strange for a portrait. This painting gives the spectator the impression that everything is quiet, a bourgeois quietness.
