The Honourable Mrs. Graham, Thomas Gainsborough (1777)
The title of the painting is The Honourable Mrs Graham. Thomas Gainsborough painted it in 1777 .
There is one character, a woman. She is
standing, she might be rich because she is wearing a silky dress
.
The scene probably takes place in a Greco-Roman church because
the woman is standing against a pillar. Her posture is carefully
studied. She is wearing a hat with a feather. The background is
dark but her face emphasized by the light. She is holding a feather
in her right hand . Her look is serious, she seems captivated by
something.Her complexion is white.
Maybe the feather that she is holding is an ostrich feather, which means she is rich because ostrich feathers were very expensive at that time. This portrait was created a year after her marriage to the Honourable Thomas Graham. She fell ill and died during her journey to France in 1792.
Her remains were defiled by the mob, as it happened during the French Revolution. Her husband, who loved her dearly, could not look at the portrait after her death. He ordered it to be taken away. The portrait was discovered by his descendants later and presented to the National Gallery of Scotland.
