Mrs Philip Thicknesse, Thomas Gainsborough (1760)

Thomas_Gainsborough_Portrait_of_Mrs_Thickness

The painter, Thomas Gainsborough was born in 1727 in Sudbury, Suffolk and he died on August 2nd 1788.

He painted Mrs Philip Thicknesse in 1760, the representation of a woman who is about 20 years old. She certainly belongs to the bourgeoisie or maybe she’s an aristocrat because she is showing her wealth.

She is placed in the middle of the painting, she’s wearing a white dress to set her out from the background of the painting.

She’s sitting, slightly turned to the right and she’s resting her elbow on books. They may be music books because behind her, we can see a cello and she’s holding a small guitar in her arms, maybe she was a musician.

Her face is turned to the left and we can see that she is putting her hand through her hair to show she has got presence and grace, she’s slightly smiling. Maybe she is indifferent to the painter because she’s looking away with arrogance. She’s fond of music and she proves it though the painting.

Behind her, in the background, we can see a red canvas to enhance her figure, so we can notice her more in the painting.
